More mods

Today I’ll talk about a couple more simple mods that I did on the camper.

Grey water tote od

Grey water tote mod

The first mod was to change out the wheels on my grey water tote.  These grey water totes are pretty nice.  They hook to the hitch so it is easy to take to the dump station.  I never thought that I’d use one of these, but with the Roo, I don’t want to break camp if we fill the grey water tank.  The problem with these is the wheels.  They are a plastic wheel with a solid tire.  The wheel is just mounted on a metal rod.  If you go too fast, the plastic wheel will melt.  So I was in harbor Freight today and decided to get the new tires.  These are 8-inch pneumatic tires with a bearings.  I knocked the end cap off the axle and removed the wheels.  Then threaded the new wheels and the plastic spacer onto the axle.  I was lucky that the end cap popped back onto the axle.  I think this will work great.

Rivet nut tool

Rivet nut tool

My wife asked me to hang a toilet paper holder.  I drilled into the luan and tried some hollow wall anchors.  I screwed the holder in place and it was loose.  Hollow wall anchors just don’t work well in this stuff.  Someone on the Popup Portal forum suggested that I try rivet nuts.  It sounded like a good idea, so while at Harbor Freight, I picked up a tool to install them.  I tried it out by installing that toilet paper holder and a paper towel holder.  This thing works great.  I wish I knew about this tool a long time ago.

LED lamps

LED lamps

While I was at Harbor Freight, I spotted these lights on sale.  They have about 20 LEDs on the front and 1 LED on the end.  They are a lot like these on Amazon.  They also have a strong magnet on the back and a hook to hang it.  Press the button 1 time and the front LEDs come on, press it again and they go out.  Hit the button 1 more time and the single LED on the end comes on.  I figured I could figure out a place to use these.

Lamp mount

Then it dawned on me that I could light the outside compartments with these.  So I drilled some holes and screwed in some screw eyes.   I looped the lamp’s hanging hook through the screw eye and I think this is going to work out well.  It gives me a quick light for rummaging through the compartment.  If I need to use it as a flashlight, I can take it with me.  Not a bad deal for just a couple of bucks, I think I’m going to like this simple mod.

That’s it for now.

More quick mods

A couple of weeks ago, I posted some of the quick mods I did with the new camper.  Today I’ll talk about some other quick mods, some of these are just stuff I bought to make things easier, others are actual mods.

Extra chair

Extra chair

This first one is just a simple chair.  For anyone that has 2 kids, you know that it can be a challenge to sit them next to each other for a meal or a game.  The dinette in our Roo has 3 sides so the 4th side is unused.  We happened to have a wooden folding chair that matched our interior perfectly.  We usually sit one of the kids on this chair.  It has saved us from playing referee on several occasions. Grey water storage mod

One of the problems that every camper owner must address is that of grey water.  Since I have a popup, I don’t have to deal with black water unless someone uses the cassette toilet.  But we all have to deal with grey water.  That’s the stuff that’s left after washing dishes.

Original grey water solution

Here’s a shot of my first solution to the grey water challenge.  I carried 2 of these 7 gallon Aquatainers. This picture was also taken prior to the time I attached the hose to the lid of one of Continue reading

Camper mod: Water transfer pump

When we bought our camper, it had the standard water pump.  It was fairly loud, but I figured that was the way things were.  But I was at a camping rally and got to talking to a friend.  He showed me how quiet his new WhisperKing water pump was.  When I got home, I immediately ordered a new water pump.  I installed it along with an accumulator tank to decrease the noise even farther.

Fresh water jug

That left me with an extra water pump.  I got to thinking about it and decided to build a fresh water transfer system.  That way I didn’t have to lift a 6 gallon water jug like this one.  While this is Continue reading
