Welcome to this week’s homestead update.
Last weekend we went camping with some good friends from New York state. We don’t see them nearly enough since we live about 6 hours away. But we were able to set up a long weekend camping trip. We went to Knoebels Amusement Park. For those that don’t know, this is a large park with free entry. You pay per ride. It works out to be much cheaper than the other sort of amusement park. They only have 2 big roller coasters, but they are pretty good ones. We had a great time and hope to set it up again next Summer for a couple additional days.
I’ve been using boardman feeders to feed the hives sugar water. I’m tired of replacing the feeder a couple of times each week. I decided that I want to try using baggie feeding. It requires a plastic bag laying on top of the top bars. But it also requires a short hive body to keep the top elevated above the bags. I don’t know if I like doing this, so I don’t want to buy the boxes so I built 2 of these boxes this week. It cost me about $4 and an hour of my time to build them. I plan on opening the hives this weekend, so I’ll put them on the hives then.
The wineberries have started to get ripe. For those that don’t know, these are a relative to raspberries. But they are invasive. We have them growing along the tree line. Even though they are invasive, they are very tasty so I’m not pulling them out. When they get ripe, my daughter and I start foraging for berries. We usually get 2 quarts or so each year. Tonight we started picking and after about 2 minutes, a storm came up on us and made us come in. So I guess we will go out there tomorrow morning to pick what we couldn’t get to tonight.
That’s what happened on my homestead this week.
