Welcome to this week’s update.
Last weekend we went camping. There were a bunch of tomatoes that started turning red. I decided that they could wait until I returned from the camping trip. I used the trimmer to cut a path to the garden beds. My wife and I picked the produce that was ready to harvest. Here’s a shot of the produce that I picked over the weekend. My wife went back out late in he week and picked at least as many tomatoes as shown on the table.
I’m very happy with the bell pepper harvest so far this year. Usually, I get a few small peppers and that’s it. This year I’ve harvested a dozen or more big bell peppers. I’ve also harvested about 100 jalapeno peppers. I turned about 50 of these into jalapeno poppers, the rest I gave away to coworkers. I still have several that I will likely give to my neighbor. The disappointment is the tabasco pepper plant. I think that I planted it too close to the tomato plants. The plant is kind of tall and spindly but I haven’t harvested a single pepper off of it.
One interesting thing about the picture of the harvest is the carrots. I don’t remember planting any carrots. I refered back to my gardening spreadsheet and I did plant a couple carrot seeds. That’s a big benefit of keeping the garden spreadsheet. I am very happy with the size of the carrots, though. I’m also thrilled that I don’t have a bunch of black holes through the carrots. In previous years, all the carrots had holes that looked like they were burned. I think the reason is the compost that I filled the beds with was not completely finished. Now that this bed has been in place for 3 years, it certainly is finished.
I processed the tomatoes that I harvested over the weekend into pulp. I ran them through my Roma Food Mill. This takes out all the seeds and the skins. I put the resulting pulp into freezer bags and froze them. In a couple of weeks, I will pull these out of the freezer and combine them with future bags of pulp and make them into tomato paste. I wrote up a review of the Roma Food Mill when I first used it if anyone is interested in it.
That’s what I have for this week.
