The stink bug invasion continues

We went camping this past weekend.  We had a great time, even if we did get a lot of rain Saturday night.  But one thing is really showed us was that the stink bugs are back in force.

Welcome to this week’s homestead update.

Canned green beans

As I posted on Monday, I canned green beans over the weekend.  While I didn’t harvest these, I do know where they came from.  We have a lot of farmers nearby, these came from the Jones family farm.  We buy a lot of stuff from them and really like dealing with a farmer that we know.  That bushel of green beans yielded 21 quarts of green beans, plus enough to use as sides for 2 more meals. My biggest pest: Mexican bean beetle

While I was taking some pictures of some bugs in the garden, I spotted my main pest, the Mexican bean beetle.  This was the first that I’ve seen them this year, but they have begun the yearly attack on my beans.

Mexican bean beetle

Obviously since they are Mexican bean beetles, they attack bean plants.  Every year, these suckers attack my green beans and fill the leaves with holes.  That would be bad enough, but they also eat the bean pods.  To add insult to injury, I have yet to find anything that Continue reading

A couple more bugs in the garden

I was working in the garden this weekend and came across some bugs that I could get some pictures of.  I thought I’d share them with you guys.

Unknown bug

This first bug is still unidentified.  These were sitting on the leaf of a wild raspberry plant that is invading the asparagus.  They are very cool looking, and since I don’t know what they are yet, I decided not to kill them.  Hopefully they turn out to be a beneficial insect.  They look kind of like a moth, but they also have beetle characteristics.  So Continue reading

Homestead weekly update

Welcome to this week’s homestead update.

Last weekend we went camping again.  We had a good time, but because we were gone for 4 days I didn’t get a lot done on the homestead.

Big zucchini

When we got home from the camping trip, I took my son down to the garden to pick anything that was ready.  While I picked some tomatoes, I asked him to check out the zucchini.  He looked all over the bed and even lifted the leaves up to look under.  He yelled over that there weren’t any ready.  So we Continue reading

Welcome to this week’s update.

First of the peppers

Here’s a shot of one day’s harvest.  There’s a bunch of Amish paste tomatoes in there.  I’ll make them into tomato paste late in the week or over the weekend.  I’m not sure of the zucchini, we will probably cook it up for dinner.  I was excited to harvest some peppers.  These are the first of my bell peppers of the year.  There are a couple of smaller peppers, but I’m happy with the size of them.  Normally I end up with tiny peppers, these are a little bigger but nowhere near as large as store bought peppers. Homestead Weekly Update

Welcome to this week’s homestead update.

Zucchini & okra

As I mentioned the other day, we went camping at Lake Sherwood campground in West Virginia.  As most people who have grown gardens know, I ended up with some big zucchini squash after ignoring the garden for 2 weeks.  The biggest is in this picture, it’s about 14″ long, but over 4″ in diameter.  This will be too tough to use for anything but zucchini bread.  The okra in this picture were the first pods, so while small, were still too woody to eat.
